Suzuki Australia has handed Lake Macquarie Police District the keys to “Sergeant Jim”, a specially liveried Suzuki Jimny that will spearhead the district’s community-engagement programme. The pint-sized 4x4 will tour school visits, fetes and safety expos, giving officers a friendly ice-breaker while promoting crime-prevention messages.

The Jimny arrives under a sponsorship agreement that leaves ratepayers footing none of the bill. It will serve a district that spans roughly 648 km² and 95 distinct communities, already home to about 221,000 residents and projected to add another 24,450 people—and 13,700 new dwellings—by 2036.

Suzuki chose the Jimny for its recognisable silhouette and broad fan base. “Sergeant Jim is more than just a vehicle—it’s a conversation starter,” said Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota, noting the brand’s grass-roots owner events that often draw hundreds of cars.

Lake Macquarie Commander Superintendent Tracy Chapman APM expects the Jimny to “break the ice” with young people and other hard-to-reach groups. “Its distinctive livery should invite questions and make approaching police less intimidating. Best of all, the vehicle costs the community nothing.”

Beyond its local duties, Sergeant Jim underscores a wider shift toward using approachable, even playful, vehicles to strengthen ties between police and the public. As the little Suzuki begins its rounds, it symbolises a partnership aimed at safer, more connected neighbourhoods—one selfie and school visit at a time.
